This contains spoilers for last night’s episode. You’ve been warned!
OK, so I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan. I’m up to date with the TV show, and I’ve read all the books so far. (Side note, where the HELL is Winds of Winter?) But I have a few issues with the way it’s going right now.
When did it get so cliched?
We all fell in love with this show because it was unpredictable. No one was safe, anyone could be killed at any moment. Now everyone just gets saved in some roundabout, unlikely way and I’ve had enough.
So let’s go through each important storyline right now, and let’s discuss (rant) about it before I go insane.
Daenerys
Is anyone else getting annoyed with The Mother of Dragons? She seems to have forgotten what armour is for. Even though her dragons were nearly shot out of the sky by Bronn, she still continued to go and fight the white walkers without any kind of armour for herself or her ‘babies’. Do I think it’s her own fault that her dragon was shot out of the sky and turned into a white dragon? You bet I do.
Also, what was with the burning of the Tarleys? The thing that was alluring and promising about Dany was that she was fair and a little unsure of herself. They got rid of that and created a monster.
Jon Snow
WTF. Why the hell is Jon Snow bending the knee all of a sudden? And how can he be in love with her after about 4 conversations? That ain’t love, Tyrion, that’s lust. I should probably say at this point that a colleague had me convinced that Jon was going to be turned into a white walker in this episode. At first, I was gutted – and then I was crazy excited because it’d turn the WORLD on its head. But that didn’t happen. And I was disappointed.
Let’s also not forget about the incestuous love story between the two. It was so predictable, and the same storyline that forms the basis of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments. Yawn.
Tyrion
What the heck happened to Tyrion? He’s so boring now, he’s putting me to sleep. This is the badass guy who killed his own FATHER, for crying out loud. And now he’s just skulking around following Dany like a little puppy. Tyrion needs to whip his queen into shape and stop her from turning into her dad. He’s a Lannister. Act like one.
The White Walkers
What is irritating me most about the White Walkers is the fact that you can kill their entire army by killing the king and his four cronies. Monsters being tied to their creators? Hello, the Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Lazy writing that has been done before. Now all they have to do is burn the king and it’s game over.
Arya & Sansa
WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THESE TWO. I’m totally #TeamSansa right here, but seriously, Arya needs to get a grip. What’s she going to do? Kill Sansa and rule Winterfell herself? Become Sansa and tell Jon that everyone else who has seen Arya is lying? Sansa has not had it easy and has made some mistakes – but so has Arya. There’s no need to be so horrible about it. Sansa did what she had to survive – and as she rightly said, she was the one who won back Winterfell.
Cersei
Is it just me, or is Cersei a little boring these days? All her and her brother seem to do is walk around, reviving their old motto that hasn’t been heard for ages ‘A Lannister Always Pays Their Debts’. Cersei, did one bad ass thing and killed Tyene whilst her mother had to watch, but that was it. I thought she was meant to be going crazy? That would have been good television.
Game of Thrones
Of course, Game of Thrones is an amazing story with some of the greatest characters ever created. But I don’t believe for one second that George R R Martin would write his books in this way. A good writer knows that they should torture their characters, which is what he always does (it’s why everyone fell in love with this book/show to begin with), but I feel like he’s had little influence over this series.
And let’s not forget how FAST it’s all going. It took about six episodes to get anywhere in the earlier seasons, now it takes 30 seconds.
The writer in me is not happy with the lack of consistency, and as much as I was originally annoyed that Martin was paying so much attention to the show and not to his books, I kinda wish he’d carried on. And if he did, it’s certainly not showing.
Come on GoT. Give me a HUGE twist for the finale and become great again. I’m waiting…
I’m with you on this. I’m a huge fan of the show and while this season has been enormously exciting, it’s also been quite frustrating. The faster things move, the more it reveals the shortcuts it has made in storytelling, which is a damn shame for a show that started off with such patience. Conflicts are arising out of nowhere (Sansa & Arya), while pretty much nothing is happening wherever there isn’t dragons (King’s Landing). It feels like GoT is speeding towards its endgame and I don’t like that at all.

I know, right?! I totally agree – it’s not doing the story justice. I can’t understand the huge rush to the finish either. They must be making tonnes of money out of it. You’d think they’d want to keep it going as long as possible.
